Sundanese is the language of West Java and Banten, with the exception of a strip along the north coast west and east of Jakarta, where Javanese dialects are spoken, while in the capital, Jakarta, Malay is used. The language as spoken in and around Bandung is the dialect which is considered as the standard language.
The Government officially proclaimed it as the standard language in West Java in 1912.
